Project Background & Tool Management Challenges
A large automotive parts manufacturing plant in India faced severe challenges in tool management. Their traditional manual inventory-taking took up to 2 days per cycle. This inefficiency resulted in an annual tool loss rate of 15% and introduced safety hazards due to tools being used past their expiration dates. In 2024, they partnered with InfoWise to implement a smart tool management system, achieving full lifecycle digital tracking.
InfoWise RFID Hardware Configuration
To solve the complex metal environment challenges of a tool room, we deployed a robust RFID smart cabinet integration:
1. UHF PCB Anti-Metal Tags
Operating at UHF frequency (860-960MHz), these tags are directly fixed to metal tools like wrenches and drills. They are highly resistant to high temperatures and corrosion, providing a reliable read range of up to 3 meters.
2. Smart Cabinet Integration
- GZY-E98 Eight-Port Reader: Supports the EPCglobal UHF Class 1 Gen 2 protocol. It is capable of high-speed batch reading, identifying 200+ tools per minute.
- GZY-T2020 Antenna: Its specialized array layout ensures a 99.9% recognition rate even in dense metal environments, offering strong anti-interference capabilities.
RFID System Functions & Measurable ROI
By upgrading to the InfoWise RFID solution, the Indian plant achieved immediate return on investment:
- Automated In/Outbound: Tools are automatically identified when placed into or removed from the smart cabinet. Processing time dropped dramatically from 5 minutes to just 1 minute per instance.
- Real-Time Inventory: Inventory time for thousands of tools was slashed from days to hours, achieving an unprecedented 99.8% accuracy.
- Permission Alerts & Security: Access is strictly controlled via work cards or fingerprint verification. The system generates immediate alerts for unauthorized actions, such as unreturned tools, completely eliminating tool loss.
